What trenchless sewer repair is
Trenchless sewer repair replaces or rehabilitates the sewer lateral that runs from your house to the street without digging up its entire length. Instead of an open trench through lawn, hardscape, mature trees, or a driveway, the work happens through one or two small access pits, and in some lining jobs through an existing cleanout with no digging at all. For a San Fernando Valley home where the lateral runs under a stamped-concrete driveway or a landscaped front yard, that difference is most of the value: the pipe gets replaced, and the surface you spent money on stays put.
There are two main methods, and they are not interchangeable. Pipe bursting pulls a cone-shaped bursting head through the old pipe, fracturing it outward into the surrounding soil while dragging a new HDPE pipe into the same path behind it. You get a genuinely new pipe at the same diameter or larger, which matters when an old 3" or 4" line is undersized for the home. CIPP lining, by contrast, keeps the old pipe in place: an epoxy-saturated felt liner is fed into the cleaned host pipe and cured against its walls, creating a smooth, jointless new pipe inside the old one.
Most Valley laterals from the 1940s-1970s are vitrified clay with a joint every few feet, and every joint is an invitation for roots. Cast iron sections rust and scale from the inside. By the time a line is backing up every few months despite regular rooter service, the pipe itself is the problem, and clearing it again only rents you a few more months. Trenchless is how you fix the pipe instead of the symptom.
Signs your sewer line needs more than another cabling
The clearest sign is repetition. If you are calling for rooter service every few months, roots are re-entering through the same cracks and joint gaps each time, and the cable is only punching a hole through the blockage. Each visit buys less time than the last, and the money spent clearing the line starts to rival the cost of actually fixing it.
Other symptoms point the same direction: multiple drains backing up at once, gurgling from a toilet or tub when another fixture drains, sewage odor in the yard, and a stripe of lawn that stays green and soggy while everything around it is dry. That wet patch is the line leaking wastewater into the soil, which feeds the grass and also feeds the roots that caused the problem.
None of these symptoms tells you which repair is right, and neither can we without seeing the pipe. That is why every trenchless quote we give starts with a camera inspection. Lining, bursting, or open trench: how we actually decide
CIPP lining fits when the host pipe is structurally sound enough to hold a liner: cracks, root intrusion at joints, minor offsets, and general age-related wear in a pipe that still holds its round shape. Lining can negotiate bends that pipe bursting cannot, and when there is a usable cleanout it can sometimes be done with no excavation at all. The trade-offs are honest ones: the liner slightly reduces the pipe's internal diameter (the smooth epoxy wall largely offsets this in practice), and the line must be thoroughly cleaned, usually hydro jetted, before lining. A liner installed to ASTM F1216 carries a 50-year design life.
Pipe bursting fits when the pipe is too far gone to line: badly broken or deformed clay, heavily scaled cast iron, or a line that needs to go up a size. Because the old pipe is fractured and pushed aside rather than reused, its condition barely matters as long as a cable can be pulled through it. Bursting needs a launch pit and a receiving pit and works on straight runs, and the new HDPE pipe it installs is a fully structural replacement with a service life measured in generations, not years.
And sometimes the honest answer is a shovel. A fully collapsed, soil-filled line usually cannot be lined or burst because nothing can pass through it. A significant belly or back-graded section cannot be fixed by either trenchless method, because both follow the existing pipe's path; lining a belly just gives you a smoother pipe that still holds standing water. Re-grading requires excavation. And on a short, shallow run under bare dirt or lawn, a conventional spot dig is often simply cheaper than mobilizing trenchless equipment. On many jobs the right plan is a hybrid: excavate and re-grade the one bad section, then line the rest. We quote whichever fix is right for your pipe, in writing, before any work starts.

A typical residential lateral is 30-60 feet, so most full-line trenchless jobs in the Valley land between $3,500 and $15,000, with spot liner repairs on a single damaged section coming in well under a full-line price. Long runs, deep pipe, and work extending under the street push totals higher.
The variables that move your quote are concrete: how deep the line sits (deeper pits mean more excavation and shoring), how long the run is, whether access pits land in dirt or in concrete that must be cut and restored, whether the line needs jetting and root removal before lining, whether a cleanout has to be added, and permit and inspection costs in your city.
